Becoming a midwife

Training program

With the profession booming, job prospects for future midwives are excellent! University-level training is offered exclusively at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) and lasts four years. This bachelor’s degree of 132 credits is completed over nine terms. The internships take place in the various settings where midwives practice (home, birth centre or hospital).

Midwifery scholarships for certain regions

In order to support the deployment of the midwifery service offer at the provincial level and more particularly in certain targeted regions and to improve the attraction, retention and availability of personnel for this title of employment, a scholarship program is offered to students registered in the bachelor’s program (132 credits) and the certificate in Quebec (30 credits), for the last year or the 2 final years of university education.

Permit to practice

Once you have obtained your UQTR diploma, to practise in Quebec and use the title of midwife, you must hold a permit from the Quebec College of Midwives and be a member in good standing. The OSFQ monitors the quality of practice of the midwifery profession for the benefit of the population.

If you are a midwife and were trained outside of Canada, you must submit your file to the Quebec College of Midwives.

Already a midwifery student?

By joining the RSFQ, you also become part of the Canadian and international community of midwives and midwifery students and automatically become a member of the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM) and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM). Click here to fill out the membership form. The cost is $30 per year with $20 going to the Canadian Association of Midwives. Each year, a representative of the RSFQ visits the first year, fourth year and bridging program cohorts to introduce you to the professional association of midwives and to talk about practice, development and labour market realities.
